The Newest Urban Sketcher...

Since I haven't blogged in some time, I've decided to be more serious about it. I also am determined to become an Urban Sketcher... what is that you ask? Urban sketchers are artists that document the world around them by traveling through cities, towns and their own neighborhoods and sketching and drawing their urban landscape into journals and sketchbooks.
The key to being a good Urban Sketcher seems to be all about having a good eye and a nice supply of easily transported artist tools. So here is my new Urban Sketcher tool kit (as seen above)

1 hand bound sketchbook made from Arches 90lb. Cold press watercolor paper (approx. 8" by 6")
1 Winsor & Newton Cotman Sketchers' Pocket Box - 12 half pan watercolor kit
1 Travel Size 2 watercolor brush
3 Pigma Micron Waterproof ink pens - Black Sizes 05, 02, 01
1 Pentel 0.5mm Mechanical Pencil (no sharpening required)
Extra Pentel 2H lead
1 Knead Eraser
1 Small portable plastic palate cup (for water)
1 Canvas Pen bag with clip (from Utrecht)

So I'm ready to go and create art (or at least some Urban Sketches). Tomorrow I will do some local sketch work and Sunday I am headed to Burlington to do a day long Sketchcrawl... sort of like a pubcrawl only with on location sketching and not a lot of drinking (there will be some drinking of beer). The Pain Continues: Day Two

Sunday I left my hotel and went directly to see the friendly faces of the bike mechanics at LL Bean's bike shop (which is open 24 hours a day every day of the year... just so you know). I was in search of a product that only bikers (and perhaps other stupid people that spend hours sitting on a tiny seat) know about.... Chamois Butter. Now if you have never needed the services of said product I won't go into details of it's use, but for those of you who know... this was an emergency. The boys of LL Bean were very helpful and full of understanding for my dilemma. Thanks guys!! The rest of my day was full of head winds and hills... my favorite, but also an amazing dish of crabcakes and later a fabulous Lobster Newburg... no calorie counting for me!!! I had a great time hanging out with Ms. Bethany Plissy and the very soft bed in her sister's house. So far so good. Oh, and Milage count: Day One: 67.5 miles Day Two: 48.5 miles Total: 116 Miles

Updated Urban Sketcher post

Hi all, It's been a while since I posted and I've kicked up my game a little. I have joined the Urban Sketchers group here in Portland. They are a fun group of amazing artists...professional, amateur and all talented. It is a great learning experience to meet up and look at a location from different sets of eyes. I've learned more about what works and what doesn't work for me...so here it is: I have my own watercolor kit with scavenged tube watercolors from cheap coleman to some pricy utrecht artist line. As I get better with my skills I plan to upgrade my watercolor kit. First blog post... here I am

Well, the site is up and running... very exciting. I'm currently working on some new pieces to upload and I'm working on an idea for a children's book. So many ideas and so little ... hmmm motivation? I'm hoping to get into an Illustrator class this summer to hone my skills a little more. I would like to get some more work done on the comic book idea by the end of the summer. Again... getting the work done, priceless. And so it begins...
